All is Fair (Crazy Love)
Part II of my blog series taking you through the stories behind the songs on my debut album, All is Fair.
"All is Fair (Crazy Love)"
I've mentioned a few times that the title track, "All is Fair (Crazy Love)" was inspired by a playlist I made a while back. In fact, the original working title for the song was "Playlist." Understand that I'm a playlist person. I have a running playlist, one called "Ruminate," one called "Hype," etc. etc. To me, music is pure emotion and making playlists is a way of understanding and sometimes overcoming that emotion.
"All is Fair" is based on is one that includes some of the most hopelessly romantic songs in my library. I made it so that I could get over that feeling, and it ended up inspiring me to try to capture that feeling through my own music. The actual list is as follows:
1. Crazy Love- the Brian McKnight version
2. Adore- Prince
3. Stubborn Kind of Fellow- Marvin Gaye
4. Let's Get it On- Marvin Gaye
5. If I Could Build My Whole World Around You- Marvin Gaye
6. Anytime- Brian McKnight
7. Make You Feel My Love- the Adele version
8. Won't Let Me Go- Amos Lee
9. I Just Don't Think I'll Ever Get Over You- Colin Hay
10. All in Love is Fair- Stevie Wonder
11. Knocks Me Off My Feet- Stevie Wonder
12. Slow Dance- Keri Hilson
13. If I Ain't Got You- Alicia Keys
14. These Arms of Mine- Otis Redding
15. Let Me Love You- Mario
16. I Can't Make You Love Me- Bonnie Raitt
17. A Case of You- Joni Mitchell
18. Angel- Aerosmith
19. No Air- Jordin Sparks and Chris Brown
20. On Bended Knee- Boyz II Men
21. Carolina in My Mind- James Taylor
This is the original playlist in the original order. At some point, I wanted to tell my own story through these songs. To take a related body of work and use each song individually in a way that describes how each is significant to me. After all, that's the reason I picked these songs for this playlist in the first place. Before there was even the idea of writing a song, there was the story.

Thank you for sharing your playlist with me, with us. It really gives us more of an insight into the person you are. You can tell a lot about a person based on their favorite songs. You the, you the best :)
All is Fair (Crazy Love)
on May 11, 2010Thank you for sharing your playlist. I have been one to play mix tapes and now I have a new MP3 player. Anyway, many of the songs on your playlist mean a lot to me also. "Carolina in My Mind" especially tells a specific story from my past. Sometimes - Anoop - you create this "dejavu" feeling. It is like you are on the same wavelength. Keep writing the inspiring music, even for us "old fogies."
Inspiring & Touching!
on May 11, 2010I do playlists too..for the same reason. Your's touches me deeply. Thanks so much for this.

Yes Anjana's mix tapes are the best. She put SO MANY SONGS on there, too. Haha.

I love this. Thank you so much for sharing your inspiration - it's nice to get a glimpse into the thought process that goes into your songwriting. I am a huge fan of making playlists (some of the people commenting here know that I enjoy a good playlist/mixed CD ;) and I completely relate to the idea of needing to "wallow" in specific emotions at certain times. Every song on All is Fair is most definitely playlist material.

Thank you for sharing the songs. I agree w/ "Before there was even the idea of writing a song, there was the story".
Romantically Hopeless
on May 11, 2010That's a lot of romance for one playlist. And you managed to write a hit using it. I'm feeling the mix of old and new school. It’s cool to see your playlist and what inspires your music and this song in particular. :)
ICan't Make You Love Me- Bonnie Raitt
on May 10, 2010This song is in my "soundtrack to my life" playlist (along with won't let me go). I remember singing this at a campfire during the geology field school. It really fit the mood in the oddest way at the time. I can't imagine how, though.
All Is Fair
on May 10, 2010Thanks for sharing your playlist with us. You have got quite the playlist. I am afraid I'm not as creative with playlsts. I tend to listen to radio or one song over and over when I'm sad like "Making Love Out of Nothing at All" by Air Supply or "All Cried Out" by Allure. But I think you should keep with the name Playlist with a future album, sort of implying that all the songs on the album are worthy of being on a playlist. Part of the songwriting process, I've been told, is to recycle an idea not used for one song into another.

that is pure genius! love your work!

This is officially the best playlist ever since it inspired All is Fair (Crazy Love)! I hope you'll keep making playlists!

Thanks for sharing! It's so true how music can get you through so many emotions that you go through on a daily basis. I love most of your playlist and can't wait to hear some of the songs on there I don't know! Thanks for all you do, Anoop. You are the main one on most of our playlists helping guide us all through our days, much like your playlist does for you. :)

I am a playlist person too. I can't deal with hitting shuffle and going from one emotion to the next -- I need it all neatly meshed together. Thanks for sharing all your songs. I was going to post all the songs I came up with and ask you how close I was. I got some of them, the obvious ones, but I didn't catch a few of them. Oh and the title of my hopelessly romantic playlist? "Music to Sleep To". But au contraire, it never made me fall asleep haha.

I am definitely a playlist/mix tape person. Trying to capture a mood or a feeling in a playlist is fun. Thanks for sharing this Anoop!
Thanks for sharing
on May 10, 2010"won't let me go" is in most of my non-work out playlists. I like it a lot.
Nice
on May 10, 2010I'm a big fan of that Joni Mitchell song "A Case of You". Was wondering if you could do a cover of that song on youtube for us? p.s. bought the EP!

My playlists and iPhoto files of art pics for future paintings can drive me crazy... you're right, though, once I sort them out, the clarity allows creativity to proceed. Is there no mention of Mikush in this story, though? ;)

I really love this blog entry. Thanks for sharing. Some of those are the greatest love songs, for me. I've never been one to make playlists, but after listening to "All Is Fair" all the way through, I feel like that is a playlist in itself as it takes me through a series of emotions that really help me to put everything "love" related in my life into perspective. I was unaware that music could do that for me,so for that, I thank you Never stop making music (lol essay, sorry).

Aw that is so cool.
Thanks for giving us all of the songs by the way.
I started making playlists a few years ago...you should see my massive playlist on playlist.com
Mostly I make playlists that will go along with my writing.
This is so neat. Thanks Anoop!
